ArtsWalk Fall 2019

Oly PopRocks

My ArtsWalk tour almost always begins with The New Traditions’ Cafe. They have a bi-yearly fiddle festival and there is almost always a full line up of amazing folk music of a variety of styles. Its sad such an amazing show happens when there is so much more going on, as I never stay for the whole thing. I saw three acts: Pinniped, The Sassafrass Sisters (friends of the podcast) and the contraband that plays a good amount of the folk dances in town.

After Traditions, my gang walked down Fifth for the normal parade of buskers, performers and food. Wouldn’t you know it, we saw some art too.

This kid is legend. Undoubtedly he will be on America’s Got Talent any day now.

This gentleman was hawking his wares, selling home made flutes. They were beautiful and sounded amazing. He also humorously sold PVC pipes of the same style. It should not be surprising the wood flutes sounded better than the plastic ones, but honestly none sounded bad. But the beautiful designs for these Native American style flutes is it’s own quality!

We stopped by the shared studio of artist Arrington de Dionyso and China Star. Both have been guests on Olympia Pop Rocks, full fledged Friends-Of-The-Podcast.

Arrington has a distinctive vision. If you see his work, you immediately know its his work. But he still has the capacity to surprise with what he lets you see. And he’s actually great too: that’s the hat trick. He makes distinguishable art that can grab you with a new piece and it’s actually good.

China is more diverse in her ability. She has a variety of styles and visions she puts out. Flashes of colors that seem to make a dream landscape, but in investigations show themselves to only be… to only be. You can look at one of her small pieces and feel like you are watching a scene, but with no recognizable figures, places, beings or objects. Its organized, but by laws and rules you only know in your gut. But she also showcased a tall skinny piece on paper with single line, expert doodles that show the life of an artist in Olympia. Winning and immediate as Picasso’s famous sketch of Don Quixote, but showing what Arts Walk looks like at its art and at its best. THIS should have been on the cover of the Arts Walk magazine!

Another Friend-of-the-Podcast stop, we couldn’t do ArtsWalk without stopping by Gallery Boom. Every kind of art is for sale here. Shitty, amazing, amateur, artisan, half baked ideas, fleshed out visions and lamps. You can buy a lamp. YOU could sell you art here! You can sell your lamps here too! A mini museum and gift shop combined!

We ended our night at QB’s back bar. It was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it, but that isn’t saying we didn’t get a table and service right away. Best spot to get a fancy drink for my dollars!
